FROM THE DEN

Even the World’s Strongest Men Need Somewhere to Switch Off

Stoltman brothers visiting The Badgers Den in Market Harborough

How Luke and Tom Stoltman’s visit to The Badgers Den reinforced why men’s self-care is about far more than looking good.

When people think of Luke and Tom Stoltman, they picture atlas stones, deadlifts, world records and two of the strongest men on the planet.

What they probably don’t picture is the pair sitting back with facials, foot treatments, waxing, haircuts and a chance to properly switch off.

But that’s exactly what happened when they visited The Badgers Den.

And if your first thought was, “The World’s Strongest brothers had facials?”, then you’re probably proving exactly why this story is worth telling.

For years, men have been told that looking after themselves should stop at a haircut and a quick shave. Anything beyond that has often been labelled as unnecessary, indulgent or “not really for blokes”. Thankfully, that mindset is changing, and if two of the strongest men on the planet are happy to put their feet up for a bit of self-care, perhaps it’s time the rest of us stopped pretending we don’t enjoy it too.

If you’ve followed strongman over the last few years, you’ll already know who Luke and Tom are. Between them, they’ve won some of the sport’s biggest titles, with Tom becoming a three-time World's Strongest Man and Luke winning Europe's Strongest Man twice. They’ve inspired millions through their performances, but perhaps even more importantly, they've shown that strength isn't just about what's loaded onto a barbell.

Together, the Stoltman brothers have become two of the biggest names in strongman, helping bring the sport to a whole new audience through competition, television and social media.

Tom has spoken openly about being autistic and the unique perspective it gives him, while both brothers have never shied away from talking honestly about the pressures of elite sport, the importance of family and why having the right people around you makes all the difference. That openness has earned them respect well beyond the strongman world, because people connect with authenticity far more than perfection.

When they arrived at The Den, there were no atlas stones to lift and no competitions to prepare for. Instead, they spent the day experiencing everything we believe modern men’s self-care should be. Decent haircuts, facials, waxing, foot treatments, good drinks, plenty of laughs and a bit of downtime that didn’t need to be earned because, in reality, none of us should have to justify taking an hour or two to look after ourselves.

Like most groups of men, there was plenty of banter throughout the day. We won’t reveal who was the bravest when it came to the waxing, but let’s just say there were a few laughs along the way. That’s part of what we wanted The Den to feel like from the very beginning. Relaxed, comfortable, somewhere you can have a laugh, try something new and leave wondering why you hadn’t done it years ago.

What surprised us wasn’t how much they enjoyed the treatments. It was the conversations in between.

We spoke about why places like The Den matter, and both Luke and Tom talked about the importance of having spaces where men can genuinely relax. Somewhere to catch up with mates, switch off from work, escape the constant noise of everyday life and have proper conversations without feeling like they have to force them.

That really resonated with us because it was one of the reasons The Badgers Den was created in the first place.

Yes, we’re passionate about exceptional barbering and premium treatments, but they were never the whole point. If all we wanted to do was offer great haircuts, we’d have opened another barbershop. Instead, we wanted to build somewhere men actually wanted to spend time. Somewhere, arriving early isn’t an inconvenience and leaving straight after your appointment almost feels like a shame.

It’s why there’s good coffee and a cold beer waiting for you. It’s why you’ll find pool, darts and comfortable spaces to sit, not rows of plastic chairs facing a mirror. It’s why we’ve introduced treatments that many men have never considered before, because once they experience them, they usually wonder what took them so long.

Looking after yourself shouldn’t feel uncomfortable. It shouldn’t feel like something you have to apologise for. It should feel as normal as going to the gym, grabbing a coffee with a mate or watching the football on a Saturday afternoon.

Elite athletes understand recovery better than most. Nobody questions them for taking care of their bodies because it's recognised as part of performing at their best. They train hard, they recover properly, and they know one doesn't work without the other. Yet somewhere along the line, many ordinary blokes have convinced themselves that making time for themselves is selfish or unnecessary.

Life has a habit of filling every spare minute. Work deadlines, family commitments, the school run, DIY jobs that somehow multiply every weekend. Before long, taking time for yourself slips further and further down the list, usually because it feels like the easiest thing to sacrifice. But perhaps it shouldn’t be.

If there’s one thing we took away from Luke and Tom’s visit, it wasn’t that even the World’s Strongest Brothers enjoy a facial, although they certainly did. It was the reminder that strength and self-care have never been opposites. Looking after yourself doesn’t make you any less resilient, any less capable or any less of a man.

In many ways, it does the exact opposite.

We’re incredibly grateful to Luke and Tom for spending the day with us, embracing the full Den experience and, more importantly, reinforcing something we’ve believed since day one. Looking good is part of what we do.

Helping men feel better, connect with one another and leave with a little less weight on their shoulders has always been the bigger picture.

And if the World’s Strongest Brothers can make time to switch off every now and then, maybe the rest of us should too.
